The Malaysia Airlines Pilot’s Politics

Zaharie Ahmad Shah supported Anwar Ibrahim. That’s common sense, not zealotry.

There is an axiom in Malaysian politics: Eventually everything comes back to Anwar Ibrahim. So, the longer that the fumbling and inept investigation into the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has gone on, the more certain it became that it would somehow boomerang to the leader of the country’s democratic opposition.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Najib Razak went before the cameras to declare that officials believe the plane was deliberately diverted and flown in an unknown direction somewhere along a wide arc from Kazakhstan to deep into the Indian Ocean. Now that the search for the Boeing 777 has turned into a criminal investigation, the authorities are taking a close look at the flight’s chief pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, and its first officer, Fariq Abdul Hamid.

They quickly learned—as no doubt all of Shah’s friends knew—that the pilot was a strong supporter of Anwar Ibrahim’s People’s Justice Party. Indeed, Shah is believed to have attended Anwar’s court hearing on March 7 that overturned his 2012 acquittal on sodomy charges, a politically motivated case that the Malaysian government typically dusts off around election time. On Sunday, the U.K. and Malaysian press treated the revelation with the shock you might reserve for damning evidence. Shah was described—by an unnamed source—as a “fanatical supporter of the country’s opposition leader.” Elsewhere, he is described (apparently by unnamed police sources) as “fervent” and “strident” in his political convictions. More than a week after the Boeing 777 disappeared, we lack a motive, a clear suspect, or even a crime scene, but we have our “Anwar Ibrahim connection.” That is Malaysian politics.

cAnwar is the 66-year old opposition leader who is the principal thorn in the side of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) that has ruled Malaysia for 56 years. Anwar heads a coalition of parties, which includes his own multiethnic party, that has made the greatest inroads against the country’s corrupt masters. In 2008, the opposition won more than a third of the seats in parliament—the first time that UMNO lost its supermajority that allowed it to change the constitution at the prime minister’s whim. Anwar, who had been a political prisoner for six years, most of it in solitary confinement, won his seat in a landslide, and the opposition won five of the country’s 13 state governments. Last year, his opposition party claimed to have won the election against the ruling party, a contest that many say was marred by widespread fraud. Anwar supported the massive protests that followed the ruling party’s supposed victory, but he never called for a toppling of the government.A fanatical supporter of Anwar Ibrahim does sound scary—as long as you know nothing about him.

Anwar is trying to defeat Malaysia’s authoritarian regime through elections—not terrorism, let alone revolution. So, to be clear, what we know is that the pilot of MH370 is a fanatical supporter of a nonviolent man who supports a pluralistic and democratic Malaysia.

Of course, we don’t know Shah’s precise state of mind, and it is true that hours before the flight, his political hero had just been dealt bad news with the court’s decision to overturn his previous acquittal. But this is not news that Anwar or his close supporters would have found shocking. On several occasions I have interviewed Anwar, most recently at his home in 2011, he was always forced to operate under the threat of these politically trumped-up charges that he viewed as nothing more than a weak effort to discredit him. Indeed, few Malaysians view the government’s accusations as anything other than evidence of crooked politics, and Anwar has only become more popular and UMNO’s rule more brittle.

But, if we are engaging in wild theories—and why not, this is Malaysian politics—then why would unnamed police sources be playing up the pilot’s political beliefs a week after we are no closer to knowing the truth about MH370? Because the Malaysian authorities’ performance during this investigation is a pretty reasonable approximation of what passes for governance in a corrupt, nepotistic regime that long ago lost any purpose besides accumulating wealth and extending its own power. Malaysia has fallen behind its Southeast Asian competitors economically in large part because of its stunted political culture. Acting transportation minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s defensive press conferences and updates, which range from opaque to contradictory, are what you’d expect from government ministers who are seldom expected to answer questions.

Najib Chickens Out on 2nd Invitation to Debate With Anwar, Using RPK as Excuse

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Malaysia Chronicle
As expected, Prime Minister Najib Razak has once again chickened out on a televised public debate with Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, this time disguising his perceived cowardice and flip-flop by using fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin.

Earlier this month, Najib had tried to give the impression that he was reconsidering the debate offer, prompting Anwar’s PKR party to send a second invitation to his office. But until now, there has been no reply although Najib had written on his blog that he was willing to hold “civilized” discourse on meaningful topics.

Najib’s sudden ‘change of heart’ had followed criticism that his Umno party contained the most gutless leaders who did not dare put their money where their mouth were, and even BN compatriot MCA was better than it. MCA president Chua Soi Lek had at least dared to take on arch rival DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in what was tagged as “The Great Chinese Debate” last month.

“Manipulated shenanigan” to allow Najib to vindicate himself
Najib’s latest U-turn is bound to strengthen the people’s worst impression of his limpid leadership, especially amongst the the young professionals, many of whom are voters and want to see what Anwar and Najib each have to offer. A recent public survey too pointed out that more than 70% of this group wanted an Anwar-Najib debate.

“The whole of Malaysia can wait until the cows come home but Najib would never dare to take on Anwar. Najib has no vision, no ideas to offer – only public relations and gimmicks like RPK,” PKR vice president Chua Jui Meng told Malaysia Chronicle.

In a recent posting, RPK had called Anwar a ‘chicken’ for allegedly muscling him out of a TV program where the Opposition Leader was due to appear with WikiLeaks founder Juilan Assange. The pro-Umno RPK also said Anwar had no right to challenge Najib to a debate – better that Anwar debated him instead.

The Umno media immediately seized on these remarks, paving the way for Najib to attack Anwar for “inconsistency”. Critics, however, said the entire episode was a “manipulated shenanigan” and signaled Najib’s curtain call on Anwar’s debate invitation.

Pressure mounting for a reply
Indeed, it has been 2 weeks since PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution issued the second invitation and pressure is mounting on the PM to reply, especially with the 13th general election looming and the people keen to see what the two sides – government and opposition – could respectively offer.
But Najib would only latch onto the RPK remarks to justify and vindicate himself for ‘chickening’ out once again.

“It appears that he (Anwar) is not willing (to debate with Raja Petra),” Bernama reported Najib as saying.

“Sooner or later, the people will question him over his inconsistency. We must be consistent. When we say we practise democracy and we are open, while deploring the government for not being democratic and open. But actually, if we look at their actions like barring some newspapers from attending their press conferences… Is this consistent with what they are preaching all this while?”

No surprisingly then that Najib came in for ridicule as RPK did for hypocrisy. Najib had taken over from former premier Abdullah Badawi in 2009. His administration is regarded as the worst ever, pockmarked by corruption, record number of flip-flops and unprecedented racism and racial bigotry.

“It is certainly not consistent for someone like Najib to accuse another person of inconsistency when he has made the most ever flip-flops of the 6 prime ministers we have ever had, including Mahathir Mohamad who ruled for 22 years,” said Jui Meng.

Anwar to take on both RPK And Najib in Debate

Malaysiakini
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to go toe to toe with his most ardent critics, self-exiled blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, popularly known as RPK, and Premier Najib Abdul Razak in an upcoming debate.

Julian Assange has agreed to host the debate between Najib, RPK and me and I have said yes,” the Permatang Pauh MP told reporter at a press conference in the parliament lobby today.

Anwar said that the Wikileaks founder Assenge had initially contacted him for an interview on Twitter, and he had agreed.

However, RPK then protested and butted into the deal, with Najib supporting him.

Looking at the exchange, Assenge then said that he is prepared to organise a three-corner debate between the contentious trio.

RPK and Najib have yet to confirm, though Anwar said he is willing to take them both on.

Debat Tiga Penjuru, Hanya Tunggu Persetujuan Najib, RPK

‘Cowardly’ Najib Uses RPK Crutch to Catch Anwar in 3-Cornered Debate

Malaysia Chronicle
By Maria Begum

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim he has accepted an offer from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to debate Prime Minister Najib Razak and fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin in a three-cornered debate.

Assange said he wants to organize the debate. It could be a three-cornered debate. I told him I agreed,” Anwar told a press conference on Thursday.

Any more crude replies from Umno or Najib?

The 64-year-old Anwar has tried many times to get Najib into public debates over the economy and state of the nation but to no avail.

Perhaps in the belief that Najib lacked the skills to match Anwar, a gifted orator, the Malaysian PM himself and various other Umno leaders including former premier Mahathir Mohamad have always countered the invitation by insisting Anwar had no right to such a debate.

Last month, after Najib gave a speech lauding a key debate between DAP’s Lim Guan Eng and MCA president Chua Soi Lek, Anwar’s PKR party sent a formal invitation to Najib.

It was met with a crude reply from Umno sec-gen Tengku Adnan, who told Anwar to debate Saiful Bukhari Azlan instead. Saiful is the complainant in the Sodomy II trial from which Anwar has been acquitted. The opposition leader has accused Najib and wife Rosmah of framing him to derail his political comeback.

Height of cowardice

It looks like the conniving at Umno has not stopped despite Najib’s grand speeches and promises of greater democracy. According to PKR leaders, this was evident in the way Najib used Raja Petra Kamaruddin – a PKR turncoat and now pro-Umno blogger – to try and get Najib off the debate hook.

A recent survey found that 54 per cent of voters in Peninsular Malaysia want to see regular debates between Najib and Anwar, with over three-quarters of young Malays backing a debate between the Umno-led Barisan Nasional and Anwar’s Pakatan Rakyat.

“Obviously it is unfair for Anwar. We all know where RPK stands but the boss has said he is not worried. Anwar has said he is not afraid. If Anwar has the courage to face the two of them at one go, it only shows how cowardly Najib is. There is no way Najib can escape now. It would be a total disgrace if Najib declines even with RPK holding his nappy for him,” PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

According to WikiLeaks website, it has extended an invitation to Najib to debate with Anwar and RPK jointly or in isolation.

“We have formally invited Prime Minister Najib Razak to discuss the future of Malaysia together with Mr Ibrahim, moderated by Mr Assange. If accepted, the filmed discussion will be seen by up to 600 million people and will be available online,” it said.

Najib and wife Rosmah are known for their love of publicity, but the sheer size of the potential TV audience might be a bit daunting. Najib is also known to be a slow thinker, who relies on speechwriters. Hence, the need for a crutch in the form of RPK, who has been attacking Anwar ever since he fled to London to avoid imprisonment over defamation charges.

Membidas Hipokrasi Tun Dr.Mahathir

–Kenyataan Media–

Amnesia, Dementia or Alzheimer’s, Dr M The Economic Ignoramus Will Never Repent

Malaysia Chronicle
By K.Suresh

Mahathir Mohamad’s claim that he did not go crawling to the World Bank in 1997-1998 for aid appears to be the result of a deliberate confusion, on his part, about the separate and distinct roles of this great institution and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The former Malaysian Prime Minister will probably claim another temporary bout of amnesia, as he once did in Court, in mistaking one for the other. Being already 86 since Dec 20, he will soon be able to claim not only amnesia but dementia and Alzheimer’s disease besides his usual paranoia.

When Mahathir was denying about having anything to do with the World Bank, he was actually talking about the IMF. No one seems to have noticed this so far.

It’s no big secret that in publicly rejecting IMF aid in 1998, the papers also quietly reported then that the rejection did not extend to the World Bank. Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was not saying anything new but highlighting the facts when he mentioned World Bank aid to Malaysia.

The Mother of All Lies
So, there’s really no need for Mahathir to swear on the Quran and defile the Holy Book with his lies. It seems Mahathir will swear to anything to save his skin. Each time he swears, it will be just to cover up another big lie. A proverb in Malayalam from Kerala, from where Mahathir’s roots can be traced, goes as follows: “One will have to tell a thousand lies to cover up the first lie.”

To his critics, Mahathir’s entire life has been one big lie lived shamelessly and without a tinge of conscience or humanitarian considerations for others. Mahathir’s reason for rejecting IMF aid – the return of colonialism as he claimed – was another great self-serving lie.

Mahathir was thereby able to dip into our EPF monies among others to bail out his family, nominees, and cronies without instituting real reforms. He should be charged with abuse of power, corruption, economic sabotage and treason. The IMF would have never stood for aid packages merely designed to bail out a small group of his people at the expense of an entire nation.

Ruthless coup d’etat and blatant cheating

This is not the first time that Mahathir has made a mess of the economy. Put it down to his inexperience in public administration and economic and financial management. This did not prevent him anyway from easing out his predecessor, Hussein Onn, from office and seizing the reins of power in what has turned out to be a coup d’ etat in hindsight.

Mahathir was also single-handedly responsible for the 1986-1987 recession in Malaysia which ended in Umno being declared unlawful by a Judge, who obviously favoured him. Judge Harun Hashim could have ruled that the votes from the 30 illegal branches should not be taken into consideration and, accordingly, handed the 1987 Umno presidency to Tengku Razaleigh. The rest is history.

Gambling without compunction, losing billions of the people’s money

The recession of 1986-1987, one entirely of Mahathir’s own making within five years of him becoming Prime Minister, was driven by two of his policies viz austerity drive; and bersih, cekap and amanah – clean, efficient, trustworthy – administration. The clean, efficient and trustworthy theme threw up the explosive BMF Scandal in Hong Kong. Those familiar with the case know it is linked to Mahathir as Bank Bumiputra reported to the Prime Minister’s Department and not the Finance Minister or Bank Negara.

Bank Negara lost RM15 billion playing with fire in the foreign exchange market until warned by the US Government to pull out. Mahathir directed this attempt to make free money in the foreign exchange market and the Bank Negara underling who carried out his hare-brained directive is today a Federal Cabinet Minister in the Najib Government. His name is Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Not content with big-time forex gambling, Mahathir the incorrigible casino king also attempted to corner the International Tin Market in London, losing billions of EPF money in the 1985 Maminco scandal.
The dip in Government spending, thanks to the hare-brained austerity drive, coupled with a dip in foreign investments following the Buy British Last Policy, and the racist anti-Malaysian Chinese Look East Policy were all enough to drive the last nail into Mahathir’s coffin until Harun Hashim saved him.

Economic mismanagement

Mahathir’s economic mismanagement was the theme of the 1987 campaign that Razaleigh and Musa Hitam, Deputy Prime Minister, ran to oust him from power.

Mahathir came close to being trounced. But during the break for Friday prayers and a break in the counting of votes for the Umno presidency, legend has it that RM 4.5 million was withdrawn from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank to buy up the votes of the remaining delegates. In addition, people posing as Special Branch officers allegedly “kidnapped” Najib and held him hostage until he gave the signal to his father’s and uncle’s supporters to vote for Mahathir instead of Razaleigh as he had earlier pledged.

Mahathir’s two closest economic advisors during the dark economic days of 1987 were former MIC President S Samy Vellu and Daim Zainuddin who went on to replace Razaleigh as Umno Treasurer and Finance Minister.

Samy advised savings through the downsizing of the government workforce, and increase in revenues, through the corporatisation and privatization of various government departments. The result was that the government workforce fell from one million to below 800,000. But today, the civil service has topped the 1.2 million mark, a 50 per cent jump on the 800,000, and still bloating.

Daim’s contribution was an accounting of the old Umno assets and to supervise the implementation of the creation of as many Malay paper millionaires as possible to keep company with the number of Chinese millionaires in the country. In the end, it was easy come, easy go. All these so-called Daim’s Boys have gone bankrupt and those that survived were bailed out in 1998 by Danaharta and other Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

Carnage and lies continue

Today, the state and federal GLC – government-linked companies – are being shamelessly touted to the masses as Malay companies and not state-owned vehicles which is what they are in reality. This is another legacy of Mahathir’s hare-brained economic policies. If you don’t achieve anything, just lie and keep lying until people believe you.

Daim could never give Mahathir a proper accounting of the old Umno assets and was soon bundled out of the Federal Cabinet. Some reports suggest that Daim was unceremoniously “sacked” after being threatened with detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and also being under “house arrest”.

Mahathir became Finance Minister, a practice followed by his successors Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib.

The economic carnage continues. The lying continues.

One proof: Neighbouring Thailand could afford to announce a minimum wage of RM 1,500.00 per month recently for all sectors of the economy.

Human Resources Minister S Subramaniam, always so full of himself, earlier this month announced that Malaysia’s minimum wage would be between RM 700 per month and RM 1,200.00 per month implemented on a sector by sector basis. In short some sectors would get RM 700.00 per month while other sectors would, at the same time get RM 1,200.00 per month. He made no reference to other countries.

This is a result of Mahathir’s economic legacies based on the theory “don’t share the cake”, “beggar thy neighbour”, “heads I win, tails you lose”.

Publicly, Mahathir always talked about win-win partnerships, smart partnerships, and prosper thy neighbour. Mahathir, ignoramus in economics, has never learnt lessons.
